Engagement and Feedback: Creating Value in the Materials Science Classroom

(For All Educators)

Prof Stephen Krause of Arizona State University, this year’s winner of the ASEE, is taking us on a journey through his own evolution as a Materials Educator, talking about what worked … and what didn’t! On the way he will talk about how important it is for both the instructor and the student to understand what the students find difficult, and how contextualizing abstract concepts can give motivation for the students to actively participate in their own learning. A must see for anyone that cares about the effectiveness of their teaching. Register here »

Plastic waste: the material challennge

(For All Educators)

This is your second chance to join us in this webinar. The challenge of plastic waste accumulating in landfills, on beaches, and in the sea has many dimensions – economic, social and environmental. Public campaigns, government initiatives, and global media coverage contribute to the growing awareness of this type of material life-cycle problem. Real-world concerns like this are a potent way of engaging students on engineering and design courses, and encouraging them to consider the (sometimes unintended) consequences arising from materials decisions.
