    Description

    Experience suggests that learning is better achieved by discovery for oneself than by passive listening. The CES EduPack Materials Science and Engineering (MS&E) Package is a set of resources that allows students to explore the relationships between Processing, Structure and Properties. They stimulate discovery and pose questions: why does this property change in that way when the material is processed? Why is this other property unchanged? The package includes data for the elements, data for structural, functional and biological materials, for processes for shaping, joining and finishing, tools to aid understanding of phase diagrams and resources that focus explicitly on the process-structure-property relation.

    This Toolkit contains the following teaching material to accompany the Materials Science and Engineering database. You can also download all the files separate by clicking these links:
  • Lecture Unit: The Materials Science and Engineering Package - An Overview. This Lecture Unit gives an overview of what is available in the Materials Science and Engineering Package, designed for Introduction to Materials Classes. Deeper information is provided as a white paper, Exercises, Project Files and Multiple-Choice Questions are also available.
  • Paper: The CES EduPack Materials Science and Engineering package. This paper presents ideas for how to use the package and links to other related resources for more details.
  • Exercises: Material Science and Engineering. The exercises are in 4 groups, each group centred on one of the top-level data-tables in the CES EduPack database.
  • Mircro-Projects. These are in two parts - 1. an hour's worth of activities to do in class to explore a particular question - e.g. Is spider silk really stronger than steel? 2. A small research project that the student could do at home as a follow up.
  • Multiple choice questions. These questions are written in GIFT format, so that they may be easily uploaded into Moodle or other Virtual learning environments.
  • Project Files. They are ready-made charts, fully labelled and formatted.
